Ol doinyo Lengai Overview

Mount Oldoinyo Lengai means “The Mountain of God” in the Maasai language. It is an active volcano, located south of Lake Natron in the heart of Maasai country. It is also on the east side of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area within the Arusha region of Tanzania.

It is uniquely produced natrocarbonate lava that is not found in any other volcano anywhere else in the world. The temperature is much lower than other lavas but not so cool because it is approximately 510-600°C. Mount Oldoinyo Lengai dominates the landscape and has had minor eruptions on an average of every twenty years for the last century.

Fortunately, eruptions happen without victims because the volcano has a relatively small size and is situated rather far from the nearest Maasai villages. The climb starts at midnight for the people staying at Lake Natron, it takes about five hours to reach the summit 2962m above sea level.
