Zanzibar Overview

Zanzibar Island is a Tanzanian archipelago off the coast of East Africa, located around 35km (22 miles) off the mainland coast and consists of many small islands and two large ones: Unguja (the main island, known informally as Zanzibar) and Pemba Island.

The capital is Zanzibar, located on the island of Unguja. Sometimes Zanzibar is called Spice Land because, back in the day, the Arabs started large spice plantations, which made Zanzibar the world’s biggest exporter of cloves at the time and earned the nickname, the spice island. Today, Zanzibar is still renowned for its cloves, nutmeg, cardamom, turmeric, cinnamon, chilli, and black pepper.

You’ll enjoy clear, turquoise-blue water; shallow sandbars perfect for wading; and many small, nearly deserted islands virtually unvisited by tourists. Explore the World Heritage Site of Stone Town, Zanzibar City’s old quarter. Or just go beach to beach between tiny fishing villages—each one’s better.

Zanzibar is one of the few places in the world that offers an unforgettable adventure and cultural experience. In addition, it is the best setting for pure relaxation.

When to visit Zanzibar

There is a huge range of accommodation options on the main island of the Zanzibar archipelago, from simple boutique hotels to all-inclusive resorts, honeymoon retreats, backpacker hostels and the most budget hotels can be found in Stone Town.
